Israeli Professor Faces Charges Over Alleged Plan to Target Arab Citizens
According to reports, the professor, who is around 60 years old and remains unidentified under a court-imposed gag order, allegedly spent nearly three years developing a “thorough and detailed” plan. Prosecutors said he also sought support from “subversive elements” within Israel’s Air Force, artillery and armored corps.
The suspect was arrested on Sept. 17 and has acknowledged the allegations against him, prosecutors said.
The indictment alleges that he devoted the last 18 months to recruiting individuals to participate in the proposed operation. He also reportedly looked for a “significant political figure” capable of helping him mobilize armed participants.
The professor eventually contacted former Likud lawmaker Moshe Feiglin, whose Zehut faction has joined forces with Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich’s Religious Zionism party ahead of the Oct. 27 election, according to reports.
After receiving no response from Feiglin, the suspect allegedly attempted about a month ago to pressure him into participating through blackmail. Prosecutors said he simultaneously used measures intended to hide the alleged scheme and prevent authorities from uncovering it.
Court documents said Feiglin, his deputy Yitzhak Hai Zaga and Zehut executive director Shai Malka subsequently turned over threatening letters they had received from the professor to police.
